A fine play. Joanna Murray-Smith has taken a pertinent issue - the celebrity adoption of children in Africa - and run with it. An ageing, failing pop star grasps with issues of staying relevant. Step forward Madonna. To acknowledge my disgust at the actions of this 'woman' would be a fair start. I abhor Madonna & her condescending attitude. The bile that spews from her mouth in justification for her pathetic actions is most foul. Yes, she is being hanged due to her celebrity. Otherwise, I wouldn't know or care about her.
SPOILER ALERT
This is part of a discussion I had. I am unable to transfer it without giving a Spoiler Alert.
The issue of adopting a local baby was raised briefly in the TV interview. It was dismissed with 'it takes too long.'
Sidney was 47 years old. (Her first album was when she was 23 - 24 years ago). This is highly relevant. It is clearly an impulsive decision by her with amazingly little forethought. With a little planning, the time delay of local adoptions is not relevant. I didn't believe her one bit. It was a hysterical woman calling out for that which she has chosen to deny herself.
The program is quite scathing in general of Sidney. There is one pithy article they have slotted in to attempt balance (junk article).
Madonna is the person most talked about in the program.
"Consider Madonna's adoptions. In both instances the so-called orphans have immediate & extended families who would raise the children at home if they had just a few hundred dollars more per year. Madonna has chosen not to assist the families of these children in reclaiming their children, but instead has claimed the children for herself."
- I would call this neo-colonialism. Headed by stupid white females.
"Celebrity adoptions, unfortunately like many other adoptions, are about the desire of rich people for the children of the poor. The adoption myth is that the world is full of orphans who need families; celebrity adoptions remind us that the world is really full of poor families who need assistance."
- Touche. It is all too easy to say that the child was an orphan. In fact, it is by PR the most sensible thing to do. Even though it is a bare faced lie.
I believe that the playwright wrote this as a scathing indictment on celebrity African adoptions. Side issues were thrown in for balance & to blind the idiots who see the issue as helpful. I truly believe that compassion for Sidney in this play would indicate a certain gullibilty.
